Sultan of Brunei visits Singapore Airshow 2012

The Sultan of Brunei, His Majesty Hassanal Bolkiah, visted Singapore today to attend the Singapore Airshow 2012.

Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen received the Sultan at the Changi Exhibition Centre and accompanied him on a tour of the exhibits at the Airshow.

Dr Ng also hosted Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to lunch, where they viewed the aerial display.

During his visit, the Sultan also paid a courtesy call on President Tony Tan Keng Yam.

Both leaders welcomed the close and strong ties between Brunei and Singapore, and reaffirmed their commitment to further increase bilateral cooperation across a wide range of fields including defence, finance and people-to-people exchanges, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement today.

The Sultan and President Tony Tan also agreed on the importance of working closely in ASEAN to ensure regional stability, particularly in today's unpredictable global climate.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah also met up with former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew at the Istana this afternoon, and was hosted to dinner by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long in the evening.

PM Lee thanked the Sultan for his strong support of the Singapor Airshow and for the close defence relationship between Singapore and Brunei.

Both leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments, and discussed various proposals to strengthen the bilateral relationship even further.

Other guests present were Brunei's Minister of Finance and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as well as Singapore's Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Yaacob Ibrahim and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K. Shanmugam.
